Atlantic Eagle Community Fund

The Atlantic Eagle Community Fund has been established from funds the Albany Port Authority negotiated through the grounding of the ship, the Atlantic Eagle in July 2008. A fee of $250,000 was charged to allow the Atlantic Eagle’s ship owners to leave the rudder on the seabed and provide a benefit to the local community.

The rudder has since been placed in King George Sound off Seal Island and is now another popular dive spot close to the HMAS Perth.

A call to community groups and not for profit organisations was made last July to use the fund.Thirty one applications were received with the total amount of requests coming to over $700,000. With the fund oversubscribed it was a challenging task assessing the applicatiosn which all had great community benefit.
